Stewart and Frank are heading off to Cambridge to play in the Basement at CB2 Bistro. This is a great venue for acoustic music and the concert, forming part of the May 2017 Tour will feature lots of new material from their forthcoming release.

Mick West, Frank McLaughlin and Stewart Hardy – Scots song and instrumentals from Scotland and Northumberland on fiddle, guitar and Scottish small pipes. Mick has one of Scotland’s most distinctive voices, and in this trio his rich, warm and expressive singing is complimented on guitar and fiddle by the highly creative playing of Frank McLaughlin and Stewart Hardy. The trio has a long standing musical kinship which shines through their arrangements, and makes for a joyous and inspiring performance.
Advanced Style & Repertoire (Mixed Instruments)

Ushaw College, Durham, DH7 9RH
Join Stewart in the beautiful surroundings of Ushaw College in Durham, for a weekend of intensive tuition. This workshop will focus on compositions by Stewart himself, with a chance to learn some of his traditional style tunes, their groove and nuances. Advanced Courses are open to proficient players of any instrument (including transposing instruments) who possess good to high technical competence. Participants may have some of the following experience and skills:
- – playing folk tunes at dance tempo
- – attending folk music sessions and joining in or leading sets of tunes
- – playing for dancing and/or in concert bands
- – teaching music
- – attending other advanced tutorials/workshops
The workshop will typically take between 8 and 12 people from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. All tuition, resources, accommodation, food and daytime refreshments are included. Sheet music and mp3 files of the tunes covered are sent out in advance, and recordings of exercises from the course are sent on to you afterwards.

30 Years Collection – Book Launch Concert

The 30 Years Collection is a brand new book of original compositions, covering Stewart’s 30 Years as a professional musician. To celebrate, there will be a small, informal concert in Ushaw College, with spots from Stewart with Frank McLaughlin, and guest a appearance from Bottle Bank Band, among others. The new books will be on sale, and do bring your instruments for a small session afterwards. Tickets £5 on the door, but seats must be reserved in advance please.
The book will be available to purchase on the website from Monday 15th July. You’ll be able to pay online and choose to have the book posted to you, or select Event Collection to pick up your copy at no extra cost from Stewart at an event or workshop. Cash is also acceptable in person!

Tyneside Fiddle Alliance will be in St George’s Church, Jesmond on Saturday 14th March for a celebration of traditional music from Northumberland and beyond. They are delighted to be sharing the concert with The Northumbrian Ranters, a fantastic group of young musicians who meet regularly to rehearse in Morpeth. The evening promises to be full of energy with a variety of traditional tunes from both groups.
All tickets £5. Doors open 6.30 pm.

Play-along Session in Harmony for Mixed Instruments
This will be a Zoom call open to intermediate players (and above) of any instrument. Notation will be provided in advance for all the tunes, together with suggestions for basic chords and a harmony line, but feel free to join in by ear! You can play the tune along with Stewart, play an accompaniment with a bass line, chords or a harmony (your own or follow the suggestions) or enjoy playing the tune whilst Stewart plays a harmony. If you wish to join in on an instrument with a different range from the fiddle, or with specfic key requirements, please get in touch before booking.

Parnell’s March
– a Northumbrian version of a lovely Irish tune which was popularised in the North East of England by ’The Shepherds’ (Willie Taylor, Will Atkinson and Joe Hutton). This gives us a chance to look at some articulation and bowing techniques used in the playing of jigs in the Northumbrian tradition.

NEFS Residential Weekend

We will be holding our first in-person NEFS Residential Weekend at the beautiful Shepherds Dene Retreat Centre near Riding Mill on Friday 2nd – Sunday 4th December 2022.
This weekend will include our usual Saturday Workshop for the block, which will be on Saturday 3rd December 10.00 am – 5.00 pm. There will be three tune workshops and a session during the day, which will give us a chance to learn new tunes, work on the relevant techniques, and play some of our NEFS tunes together. Tea and coffee is provided, and there is the option to add lunch provided by the venue. Otherwise you are welcome to bring a packed lunch, or to drive down into Riding Mill for something to eat. The lunch break will be 1 hour long.
In addition, we will begin the weekend on Friday evening with dinner and an informal session, and there will be an option to book Bed & Breakfast, so you can stay over, ready for the workshop on Saturday.
After the workshop on Saturday, they is the option to stay for dinner, and to join us for the evening. We are planning a short informal concert to inspire and entertain you, and this will be followed by a session. The bar will be open to purchase drinks and there is again an option of bed and breakfast, so you can relax and enjoy the evening.
On Sunday morning, some short 1-1 sessions with Stewart will be available for those who are interested, and we will recap Saturday’s tunes, or learn a new one, depending on what people would like to do. We will finish the weekend with lunch provided by Shepherds Dene before we head home.
We have come up with some packages to allow you to book the events you wish to attend. These include the following options:
- Saturday Workshop (tea & coffee included, bring a packed lunch, or…)
- add Lunch provided by the venue during the Saturday workshop
- Evening meal and a session (Friday evening, and/or Saturday evening including the concert)
- Bed & Breakfast on Friday and/or Saturday night
- Sunday workshop and lunch
