Emma’s Reel

I was first taught this tune by Sarah, Matthew and David Jones – three wonderfully musical siblings who I had the pleasure of teaching for a number of years. They learnt it from the famous Northumbrian piper and fiddler, Kathryn Tickell, in the first incarnation of her youth ensemble, Folkestra. The tune was composed by Willie Taylor, who worked most of his life as a shepherd. He was a good friend of Kathryn’s and was quite probably the most influential Northumbrian fiddler of his generation.
