Description
Bob and Joan
I first came across this tune when working my way through the manuscript of Northumbrian fiddler, William Vickers and to be honest it completely passed me by! Then I heard it played on the CD Scalene by Sandra Kerr, Nancy Kerr and James Fagin, which turned out to be one of those “Oh, I see!” moments. I’ve loved it ever since. ‘Bob and Joan’ is probably a corruption of ‘Bobbing John’ – aka John Erskine, the 23rd Earl of Mar, whose nickname mocked his apparent ease of drift from Tory to Whig or Hanoverian to Jacobite as need arose.
