Mick West Trio
Mick West
Frank McLaughlin
Stewart Hardy
“Mick West is a powerhouse of traditional song, with a catalogue of highly acclaimed recordings to his name. His latest five star offering, A Scots Chorus, released in 2013 and produced by Stewart Hardy, has been cited as “an absolute triumph” (R2), whilst his 2010 recording, Snark O’ Snaw, received the same top rating from Scotland on Sunday.
Mick has one of Scotland’s most distinctive voices, and, in his trio, his rich, warm and expressive singing is complimented on guitar and fiddle by the highly creative playing of Frank McLaughlin and Stewart Hardy. The trio has a long standing musical kinship which shines through their arrangements, and makes for a joyous and inspiring performance.”
“One of Scotland’s most lyrical folksong exponents” Scotland on Sunday.
“West is a wonderful singer with a big, rich, warm expressive voice – in approach and stature somewhat of a Scottish Christy Moore” The List.
A Scots Chorus brings together the esteemed Mick West as singer and interpreter of traditional Scottish songs and a capella group Muldoon’s Picnic. Together, they aim to inspire fellow singers with their hearty and beautifully arranged chorus songs. Released in 2012 on Claytara Records produced by Stewart Hardy.

I’ve been a little slow on The Tune Vault recently. There is so much going on! Still time to mess about with a few favourite tunes, however. Borthwick Riddell’s Hornpipe came up recently on one of our JSArts courses at Rydal Hall in the Lake District. The weather was fab, the setting was gorgeous and the people were wonderful… happy days!Borthwick Riddell’s HornpipeA fabulous tune probably originating in the Scottish Borders which can be found in the Jack (‘Kielder Jock’) Davidson Manuscript, housed in the Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum, and which was first introduced to me by the wonderful Matt Seattle. There are no sharps in the key signature in the original but most people play it in the Dorian mode which is how Matt published it in The Northumbrian Pipers Pocket Book - Green Book. There is also a lovely A major reworking of the tune by the border fiddler Bob Hopkirk known as The Borthwick Reel. Borthwick Riddell was a celebrated nineteenth century piper from the Scottish Borders.Borthwick Riddell's Hornpipe | The Tune Vault
