DESCRIPTION:What better way to recommence activities after the summer break than with the Fiddle Foundations course at the beginning of September. Join Stewart in the beautiful surroundings of Rydal Hall in Ambleside\, for a weekend of fabulous fiddle tuition. This is a great opportunity to spend time looking in-depth at the “how” to play\, rather than the “what” to play. For standard level fiddle players and above\, this enjoyable yet intensive course gives lots of food for thought\, and you will leave with practical exercises and techniques that are relevant to all the tunes you already play\, as well as a few new tunes! There are just a couple of places left!\n\nThe weekend runs from 3.00 pm Friday to 3.00 pm on Sunday and the course fee of £430 includes two nights in a single occupancy bedroom\, all meals and daytime refreshments\, two full days of fiddle tuition\, two evening sessions and all teaching resources. DESCRIPTION:2026 Block 5 Online \n\nWeds 16th Sept – 14th Oct\, with our in-person Saturday Workshop on 3rd October\n\n\n\nA five week course of fully-online fiddle tuition\, accessible on Zoom and YouTube from anywhere and at any time.\nIn-depth sets of Video Tutorials\, which include elements of technique\, tunes taught by the phrase and a detailed look at bowing\, ornamentation or stylistic interpretation.\nWednesday evening live Zoom calls\, 6.45 – 8.30 pm\, including Fiddle Practice and Tune Learning in the Zoom workshop\, plus playthroughs of previous tunes which form our core repertoire.\nRecordings of all Zoom calls available for catch-up on demand.\n\nNEFS 2026 Block 5 will run from Weds 18th Sept – 14th Oct\, with an in-person Saturday Workshop on 3rd October\, which can be booked separately.\nStewart Hardy\, Grace Smith and Sophy Ball will be teaching live on Zoom with lots of fiddle practice\, and new tunes to build our repertoire in the second half. \nThe Online block runs for five weeks\, with live Zoom calls on Wednesday evenings. SUMMARY:JSArts Ensemble Playing for Mixed Instruments
DESCRIPTION:JSArts courses are friendly residential weekend workshops which embrace intensive study\, where the combination of good humour and the highest standards of tuition provide ample opportunity to extract the very most from the course. The workshops typically take around 14 people\, with a maximum of 16 participants for each course. \nCourses are open to players of any instrument (including transposing instruments) and are aimed at a broad range of abilities from intermediate to advanced. Workshops focus on learning interesting tunes and harmonies\, to expand your repertoire\, improve your skills in ensemble playing\, and enjoy the delights of playing harmonies. Accompanying instruments are welcome and we will explore different way of accompanying the tunes using the instruments available on the course.

SUMMARY:JSArts Fiddle Technique
DESCRIPTION:Join Stewart in the beautiful surroundings of Rydal Hall in Ambleside\, for a weekend of fabulous fiddle tuition.  \nThese courses are centered around the technical issues that come with playing fiddle music\, with as much emphasis on how we play as there is on what we play. The workshops delve deep into the tunes\, extracting exercises to improve technique and allow its application to a wider repertoire. We focus on left-hand and bowing technique\, with the stylistic interpretation of the music a key feature. Tunes are carefully selected for their technical and stylistic content whilst also bearing in mind practical considerations such as their usefulness in folk music sessions or as dance repertoire. The tunes are taught ‘as if by ear’\, meaning they are taught phrase by phrase at a tempo and with sufficient repetition to enable learning without the need to read the notation. This encourages the development of aural pattern recognition and general musicality\, enhancing musicianship and the enjoyment of playing music in social settings.
