Roslin Castle

Both the castle and the famous chapel were built by the Sinclair family a few miles south of Edinburgh. Another of the “big beasts” among Scottish slow airs, this has enjoyed huge popularity since the middle of the eighteenth century. James Oswald did a particularly fine setting in E minor for his Caledonian Pocket Companion and there were many others, including settings by “classical” composers. The tune was known to have been part of James Hill’s repertoire, which initially sparked my interest. This C minor version comes from James Hunter’s classic collection of Scottish fiddle tunes.
