Maddison’s Thread will be playing at Hartlepool’s Wintertide Festival this year, featuring the full 10 piece line-up that rocked the album launch in January. As well as Lee’s stunning vocals, I will be joining regulars Nige (bass) & Darren (drums), alongside Paul (guitars), Kieran (flute) and Suzy (backing vocals). I am absolutely delighted that the string quartet will be getting together once again, with Emma, Jill & Fiona bringing their glorious sounds to the string arrangements. Such a treat!
This will be a landmark performance as it is not often we can get a full line-up of such splendid musicians together! And all to support the wonderful tunes and lyrics that make up Lee’s enthralling songs. The event will be candlelit creating a very special atmosphere, with limited ticket allocation, so book your tickets now.
(and do you like the Wintertide poster? A spectacular piece of art by Amanda at Mandascat – check out her work on Facebook or her website)
Rescheduled date.
I will be joining Lee Maddison for another lovely evening of Lee’s songs at this relaxed and informal venue. The Ship Inn is one of our favourite venues in which to perform and we are delighted to have been asked back. Join us from 4 pm in the beautiful surroundings of the Northumberland coastline.
“From Eight till Late”
Lee has been asked to perform some of his songs in support of an evening of poetry at this T-Junction festival event, celebrating the work of eight international poets – a real testament to the quality of his lyrics. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to go along and play fiddle alongside him. It promises to be a truly wonderful and inspiring event – do come and support.
Eight T-junction poets – Lev Rubenstein, Justyna Bargielska, Abdulkareem Kasid, Chawki Abdelamir, Aurélia Lassaque, Gerður Kristný, Eric Motswasele and Bejan Matur – take to the stage at mima for what promises to be an unforgettable evening of poetry from Russia, Poland, Iraq, France, Iceland, Botswana and Turkey. Plus music from Lee Maddison & Stewart Hardy.
Sun 27th May: Maddison’s Thread @ Chilli Cake, Hartlepool
Fiddle Techniques with Stewart Hardy
Fully Booked
Tunes are carefully selected to work as exercises demonstrating particular techniques, whilst at the same time providing a melodic stimulus. Exercises are extracted from the tunes to facilitate applying the technique to other tunes. Many of the tunes are suitable for multi-level workshops, with the teaching of a variety of techniques, requiring greater or lesser technical experience, applied to them. Subject matter includes: bowing technique, left hand technique and general fiddle well-being. In the choice of repertoire emphasis is given to stylistic aspects of the music. A number of considerations are given to the selection of tunes, including their interest to Stewart in his studies, their interest to the general musical community, their demonstration of particular stylistic nuances, and as being representative of a composer’s style.
All sheet music and mp3 files of all the tunes covered are provided and included in the price. Plus recordings of exercises from the course where these are helpful.
The workshops typically take between 7 & 10 people for three days of instruction. The cost covers all food, tuition, refreshments and overnight accommodation. The course cost for the weekend (Friday Lunchtime through to Sunday evening) includes everything by way of meals and refreshments, so no need to spend another penny on anything once you are there. Vegan and vegetarian diets are catered for, as are lactose and gluten intolerance.
Over the weekend there are 10 * 75 minute workshops. Dinner is followed each evening by an informal session led by Stewart. These help reinforce the techniques learned during the day, give you a chance to hear and learn new tunes and teach others some of your own favourites.
Your tutor is available to you from breakfast until bed-time for questions and advice.

🎶 The Tune Vault - Scant of SillerWilliam Vickers Manuscript, 1770youtu.be/RCJpVSis614Sadly, hard times have become the norm for so many these days. Contributions to my bursary fund for assisting musicians to attend the various courses and projects that Ali and I put together are always gratefully received.Scant of Siller (Wm Vickers MS, 1770)A favourite tune that leapt out during an initial perusal of Matt Seattles first edition of the William Vickers manuscript, published as The Great Northern Tunebook back in the 1980s. I suspect some development of the tune has occurred over the years. It still seems to sum up the pecuniary position of a jobbing musician! ...
